Matthew means "gift of the Lord" and was the other name of Levi who left his tax collecting vocation to follow Christ. He was one of the twelve apostles.

The purpose of this book is to demonstrate that Jesus is the long awaited Messiah that was prophesied in the Old Testament. The many Old Testament quotes in the book are meant to draw the connection between the Messiah who was promised and the Jesus of history.
